Democracy’s Flaw
Suppose you just received your paycheck and were walking to the bank when you were approached by a man that was in the bottom 50% of income earners in the nation. The man requests that you give him $500 so he can pay his mortgage and fill his car with gas. Feeling that you can put your $500 to better use than to pay this man’s mortgage and fill his car with gas you tell him, “No.” The man then pulls out a gun and tells you that if you do not give him the $500 that he will take your money by force plus a fine for not giving it to him the first time he asked then put you into a cell where you will spend three to seven years of your life considering your mistake. Does it seem fair that this man should have your $500 that you worked for? I’m sure you can all see where this is going, but now imagine that the man is the IRS. This is exactly what happens every time anybody in this country makes money that is in the top 50% of income earners.

The idea that somehow a progressive tax system is fair is an absolute sham. I really love Huckabee’s Fair Tax plan; the plan that gets rid of income taxes and the IRS entirely and just imposes something like a 18-23% sales tax on everything. Opponents of it call it regressive but they clearly don’t understand a base deduction that everyone is allowed each year. And also, how is it regressive? The rich tend to buy more and will thus pay more? Boggles my mind. Maybe it will also force Americans to actually save some money. Don’t get me wrong, consumption is great for the economy and America’s greatest strength is it’s consumer strength, but I think we’ve all seen the problems of a negative savings rate for year after year… it simply isn’t sustainable.
Here is that quote we were discussing (by C.S. Lewis of all people). I think it applies:
“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience”.
Why taxation? or reason Why not taxation? Equality?
There was a survey done in 2000-05 of 128 countries. All were also marked on how free a Nation they were. They found that five quintiles or levels of earnings in all nations closely related percentage wise. That is there were groups broken at 6-11-15-21-47 percent is standard in all societies. So weather one lived in a socialism or free country it did not make all participants on the same level economically.
What they did find is that the freer the country the higher the earnings for all class of people.
This country is not even near a democracy of mob rule. Congress refers to it when trying to convince the majority they matter.
In reality, congress rules, granted by the courts in early 1900’s saying their laws go back farther then the constitution and the constitution is irrelevant in these matters.
We lean closer to Facism then mob rule of democracy. Either way same result, taxation is collected at gun point or stolen by creation of money.
